Hillary’s Personal Toolkit for Neurodivergence:

I’m never found more than a couple feet from my Bose noise-cancelling headphones. I always feel prepared for unexpected overstimulation!

Well hi there. It’s your favourite neighbourhood autistic here for a slight departure from the sexy norm.

I’m sure I’m not the first gal to discover that neurodivergent often means navigating a world that isn’t always designed with people like us in mind. Between sensory overload, inconsistent focus, and overwhelming organizational tasks, everyday tasks can sometimes feel like finding a particular marble in a big old marble factory – tedious, stressful, and nearly impossible.

Over the years, I’ve collected some staple products that make a world of difference in my daily life, and today I’m excited to share them with you. These items address common neurodivergent challenges like overstimulation, executive dysfunction, and anxiety—problems I deal with regularly and I’m certain you do

Now, let’s dive into my toolkit!

My Personal Go-To Products

  1. Comfitech Cold Therapy Hat

I often struggle with sensory overload, and when it gets to be too much, my body reacts physically—muscle tension, headaches, even migraines. I’ve been quoted as saying, “Rip my skull in half and pour ice water inside, please”.

That’s where the Comfitech Cold Hat comes to the rescue. This cooling hat is perfect for those moments when the world feels too loud, too bright, or just too overwhelming. It’s also been a huge help for my migraines. When the pain gets unbearable, putting this cold hat on helps reduce the intensity of the migraine while simultaneously soothing my nerves. I actually own four; if it’s a bad day, I will always have one at peak cold to keep on rotation. It’s one of those products that combines comfort with function, giving me an instant sense of relief and I can’t sing it enough praises.

  1. Philips SmartSleep Alarm Clock

Now, I’m a sleepy girl. The first few moments of waking up can set the tone for my entire day and if it starts with a foghorn of an alarm, I know I’m in for a tough morning with a nasty case of the mid-afternoon nap later on. Who needs that fight-or-flight response at 7am?

The Philips SmartSleep Alarm Clock has been such a game-changer. Instead of being inelegantly startled awake, I am gradually woken to soft light that mimics a sunrise alongside the pleasant chatter of birdsong, easing me into the day. For someone who’s sensitive to sound and abrupt stimuli, this clock helps me feel calmer and more balanced first thing in the morning. It’s also perfect for those of us who struggle with seasonal depression as it gives a gentle dose of morning light, even in the gloomier winter months.

  1. Lion’s Mane Supplements

As someone who battles ADHD, I am definitely deficient in mental clarity and focus. On days I just can’t seem to drag myself through the brain fog, Lion’s Mane supplements give me that extra edge of sharpness. It’s not an overnight miracle but, over time, I’ve found my memory and cognitive function improving. Whether I’m working, writing, or trying to keep up with the sorts of necessary organizational daily tasks I struggle with, these supplements help me stay focused and valiantly trudge through my to-do list without hitting that nasty brick wall of executive dysfunction.

  1. MUSICOZY Sleep Headphones

Sleep doesn’t come easily when your brain doesn’t know how to shut the hell heck up, does it?

I often lie infuriatingly awake at night, my mind racing, or I get distracted by every little sound. MUSICOZY Sleep Headphones  have been an absolute godsend for my nighttime routine. I’ve always found regular earbuds uncomfortable and overstimulating in my ears—not to mention how pleasant it is to wake up in a cord noose after a few tosses and turns.

These headphones, by comparison, are super comfortable. As an added bonus, I use them to listen to white noise, calming music, or even guided meditations. Anything I might need to drown out that charming 3am existential dread, really, and give my brain something relaxing to focus on, which has drastically improved my sleep quality. (Pssst, pro tip: they can double as a sleeping mask or blindfold for those of you who are sensitive to light!)

  1. Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Living with sensory sensitivity means I’m always on the lookout for ways to muffle my environment, especially in public spaces. The Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones are by far one of the best investments I’ve made for managing sensory overload.

Whether I’m working in a coffee shop, running errands, or just needing to escape into a quieter headspace, these headphones are my go-to. They’re truly the most frequent accessory paired with my lingerie—lace and plastic is totally trendy, I hear. They’re very comfortable, like a memory foam mattress for my sensitive ears. But more importantly, the noise-cancelling feature really does block out external distractions, giving me the peace and quiet I need to concentrate, relax, or even just breathe without feeling overwhelmed by my surroundings.

  1. Reminder Stickers

Managing executive dysfunction can feel like constantly forgetting something. Significant, insignificant, or something somewhere in the middle. At this point I’m so used to that feeling that I catch myself tuning it out, and then I really do lose track of important deadlines or tasks.

With a lot (like, a lot) of trial and error, it became clear that I rely on visual cues, and these Reminder Stickers help me stay on track. Whether it’s reminding me of appointments, chores, or even self-care routines, these stickers give me the nudge I need to remember tasks I would otherwise forget. They’re also great for breaking down overwhelming projects into smaller, manageable steps, which makes the whole process feel less daunting.

  1. Fridge Magnet Dry Erase Board

On a similar note, I’ve learned that having a clear visual of what needs to be done every day is essential for staying on top of that endless adulthood to-do list. My Fridge Magnet Dry Erase Board helps me collect my daily tasks all in one place, which reduces the mental load of trying to remember everything. It’s especially useful for keeping track of chores, grocery lists, and important dates all in an easy-to-see, high-traffic area. The second I make an appointment or am informed of a deadline, I run to my fridge to write it immediately (and then maybe get a snacky reward).

This simple tool helps me feel less scattered and more in control of my day.

  1. Organizational Baskets for Each Room

Clutter can be incredibly stressful, and for me, having a system in place is key to maintaining a sense of calm. Ironic, I know. The very chaos I create is a detriment to my mental health. To combat this, I use Organizational Baskets in each room to keep things tidy and ensure everything has a place.

From books to cleaning supplies, these baskets help reduce visual clutter and make it easier to clean up quickly. Plus, they help with the constant battle of executive dysfunction by making organization simple and easy to maintain. As a bonus, when (not if) I lose things, they end up in one of my baskets 9/10 times.

  1. Anker Portable Charger

One of the more subtle sources of anxiety I deal with is the fear of forgetting to charge my devices overnight, especially my phone. If I wake up and my phone is dead, it throws my whole day off. That’s why I always keep an Anker Portable Charger on hand. This portable charger gives me peace of mind, knowing that even if I forget to charge my phone, I have a backup plan ready. Having this little tool reduces my anxiety, especially when I’m out and about or travelling.

A Toolkit Tailored for You

Living with neurodivergence of any sort means facing unique challenges every day, from managing sensory overload to combating executive dysfunction and everything in between. Over time, I’ve learned that the right tools can make a huge difference, and each item in this toolkit has helped me navigate my slightly-different world with a little more ease and a lot less stress. Whether it’s soothing the physical effects of overstimulation with the Comfitech Cold Hat, starting the day more gently with the Philips SmartSleep Alarm Clock, or reducing anxiety with the Anker Portable Charger, these products have become essentials in my life. They break, and I have a new one on the way in 2 minutes flat.

Remember, being neurodivergent doesn’t mean you have to struggle through every aspect of life. Sometimes having the right support, whether in the form of people or products, can help you thrive in a world that may not always feel like it makes sense. These are just a few of the items that have helped me time and again, and I’m always on the lookout for more ways to support myself—and others like me—on this journey. Let me know if you try any of these out or if you have your own favourites that help you manage your own unique brand of different!

Until next time,

Hillary
